The Seagaia Ocean Dome, was the world’s largest Polynesia-themed indoor waterpark, located in Miyazaki, Miyazaki, Japan. The Ocean Dome, which was a part of the Sheraton Seagaia Resort, measured 300 metres in length and 100 metres in width, and was listed in the Guinness Book Of World Records. It sported a fake flame-spitting volcano, artificial sand and the world’s largest retractable roof, which provided a permanently blue sky even on a rainy day. Unfortunately it closed in 1997.

The Alnwick Garden is a complex of formal gardens adjacent to Alnwick Castle in England. One of the more interesting attractions here is the poison garden and the signs on the front gate seem to give a fairly concise description of what you can expect.

Most people are familiar with the white linen strapped bodies which today we call mummies. This body fashion for the dead is actually part of an ancient Egyptian method of burial called mummification which was a complicated method of preserving the body after death; so complicated in fact that this process took up to 70 days to complete.

A more modern and ecologically friendly process compared to cremation, this disposal process turns the body into a white colored dust after it has been loaded into a Resomator. This machine enables the transformation of the remains by using water and lye and heating the mixture to about 320°F and applying high pressure. This process has been favored by environment friendly groups because it uses less energy and releases less carbon dioxide.

Derived from the Italian word for “promise” (promessa), Promession is another environmentally friendly and modern way of disposing human remains and was invented by the Swedish biologist Susanne Wiigh-Mäsak. The process involves freeze drying the body (making it bridle), shattering the body into dust, vacuum drying the dust, and releasing the dust into top soil thus creating compost within 12 months. This innovative method has been recognized by the King of Sweden with an award and has caught the interest of more than 60 countries worldwide.

One of the most famous archaeological sites which has yielded the first adult neanderthal skeletons is called the Shanidar Cave and its located in Iraq. Within the cave there were four skeletons which were estimated to have lived from 60,000 to 80,000 years ago (however, 10 skeletons have been found to date). The 2nd skeleton had the first evidence of a ritual send-off ever discovered because of the pile of stones on top of his grave and a large fire near the burial site. The 4th skeleton which was found lying on his left side in a partial fetal position and had pollen grains around where he was buried further suggested that the neanderthals had burying rituals.

From the Greek word kryos meaning icy cold, this process is the low temperature preservation of humans and animals. If you’ve watched some of the sci-fi or superhero flicks roaming around then you may be familiar with this method already. Most people undergo cryopreservation in hopes that future technology will be able to bring them back to life and back to health. However, this hope comes at a price of anywhere between $80,000 to $250,000 dollars.

Port an Eilean Mhòir is the only Viking burial discovered in mainland Britain so far. The mound was discovered in 2006 and excavation started in 2011. The boat was used either as the coffin for the dead and the grave goods (which sometimes included a slave girl) or as part of the grave goods themselves.

Bog bodies are human cadavers that have been naturally mummified within a peat bog. The actual levels of preservation vary widely from perfectly preserved to mere skeletons. The mummification is accomplished due to the conditions of the surrounding area such as highly acidic water, low temperature, and a lack of oxygen. These conditions combine to preserve (and severely tan) the bodies, however bones are normally not preserved due to the acid in the peat which dissolves the calcium phosphate of the bones.

Also known as the Ngaben is a cremation ceremony performed in Bali, a province in Indonesia. The deceased is treated as if sleeping, thus family members avoid crying since they believe the deceased will reincarnate or find his final resting place in the Moksha. The body is then transferred in a coffin on the day of the ceremony and placed in a sarcophagus resembling a bull where it is burnt.

A recent archaeological dig has uncovered a very unusual sight; residents of Bulgaria (A town thought to be Europe’s oldest) cut in half and buried from the pelvis up. It is unclear as to why this ritual occurred seeing as some of the corpse found on this dig where preserved fully intact.

Found in different locations like China, Indonesia and the Philippines, these hanging coffins (also known as Xuanguan) are attached to the sides of cliffs as part of an ancient funeral custom of minority groups. These hanging come in three types: Some are cantilevered out on wooden stakes; others are placed in caves while the third kind sit on projections in the rock. All the three forms can be found in Gongxian where most of China’s hanging coffins are located.

Wanting to go to outer space has had significant following the past decades so it’s not surprising that individuals would also want to be buried in space. Space burial is carried out by launching small capsule into space containing a sample of the ashes of the deceased. Several notable scientists, astronomers and even the creator of Star Trek, Gene Rodenberry have been buried in space. The farthest burial was outside the solar system with the remains of Clyde Tombaugh the discoverer of the planet Pluto.

The film is simply intoxicating and filled with a lot of laughs, plot and twists.

Before Sunrise tells the story of a young man and woman who meet on a train in Europe and end up having a romantic evening together in Vienna. Both know that it would just be a one night affair.  She will go home to Paris while America awaits the guy in the morning. It contains a fresh story and depicts how to celebrate love and life. The writers were able to magnify the simple things in life and made them special.

A movie filled with witty lines and cute romantic humor; Sandra Bullock pretends to be romantically linked to an unconscious man and fools the man’s family into thinking that she is his fiancée. However, in a series of funny and weird coincidences the brother of his fake fiancé was able to discover her.

A single mother who works as a waitress forms an unlikely friendship with a misanthropic author by accident. Despite the author being cranky, bigoted, and being an obsessive compulsive writer, he was still able to show his love for the single mother and her sick son. This film featured brilliant stars like Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt.

Nicolas Cage played the role of an Angel named Seth who was seen by Dr. Maggie Rice (played by Meg Ryan) in an operating room.  Despite the rules restricting humans from the ability to see angels, for some reason Dr. Rice is able to see Seth. The love the angel has for the doctor forces him to choose between his angelic immortality and a normal human existence. The film talks about what a real man would do and the sacrifices he is willing to endure in order to make love work.

Ever After is inspired by the fairy tale story of Cinderella. The title role was played by the charming Drew Barrymore who was depicted as an egalitarian minded peasant living with her cruel stepmother and two stepsisters. One of the sisters is vile while the other is actually kind. True to the fairy tale, Cinderella falls for the prince who does not realize Cinderella is a peasant.

Aside from the fact that it contains a well written script about the kind of love socialites experience during their time, viewers are sure to be charmed by the wit and style of Audrey Hepburn in this film. It depicts her in fancy clothes, parties and the facade of the Upper East Side lifestyle. Despite all of these, she still felt lonely. But when writer Paul Varjak moves into her building, they find in each other what they have been looking for. This film is also known for its last scene, which is said to be one of the most romantic scenes in a film’s closing.

Bane is the only villain credited with breaking Batman’s back (you know you’re hardcore when you can even fight the Batman let alone break his back) earning Bane the reputation of being one of Batman’s most physically and intellectually powerful foes. He is extremely intelligent, a devious but brilliant strategist and tactician with a crazy photographic memory (which he used to decipher Batman’s true identity). In short, you don’t want to mess with this guy.

A being with an incredible power source bent on the destruction of worlds; deathstorm is the first of the revived black lanterns. Whats worse is that Deathstorm possess all the powers of the original Black Lantern Firestorm, meaning he can transmute organics into whatever he wants. For Deathstorm, raising demons from ashes or turning an opponents blood into acid, is easier than thought.

Like a weed that you just cant seem to fully kill, Ultron is the robotic villain who never seems to ever be terminated. A combination of lack of emotion (in most of his renditions), a super intellect, and a desire for order makes Ultron a merciless villain whose main goal is the complete destruction of human life. Even though the Avengers have defeated Ultron time and time again, the stubborn robot finds a way to recreate himself in order to bring about new chaos and destruction.

A deep fascination with death is always a worthy cause of alarm and in the case of Black Hand is an alarm best heeded. Since he was young William Hand always had a deep admiration for killing and death which manifested itself in the death of the family dog, many visits to the psychiatrist, and necrophiliac tendencies. He eventually ends up killing all of his family members and creates a super villain suit made out of a family member’s cadaver pouch. Eventually, Black Hand receives the black ring and is pronounced as the “embodiment of death” (after he kills himself and is reanimated mind you) which grants him incredible powers.

Originally an extraterrestrial being made up of a gooey ligquid like form, the symbiote fused with Eddie Brock (an enemy to Spiderman) to create the first Venom thus becoming Spider-Man’s dark, violent and murderous counterpart. With his hulking physique and monstrous, alien like mouth Venom has all of Spiderman’s powers and due to the fact that originally it fused with spiderman, the venom symbiote also shares Spiderman’s memories.

Raven Darkholme’s a.k.a Mystique is a mutant with the incredible ability to shapeshift into whatever personality she wants (a good thing since her natural appearance includes blue skin and yellow eyes). Dubbed as one of the greatest female villains ever created; she is the mother of Nightcrawler and a foster mother to Rogue. Don’t let her looks fool you, she is estimated to be over 100 years old.

The term “fallen from grace” definitely applies to this guy. Major Force was once a superhero who switched into a life of villainy. He is responsible for raping and killing an entire village, the demise of a the green lantern Arisia, and the demise of Green Lantern Kyle Rayner’s girlfriend (whom he stuffed in a refrigerator). When you add the ability to control matter to an already twisted mind, the world becomes a blank page upon which to exact disastrous and evil deeds.

A psychopathic assassin, Bullseye uses the opportunities afforded by his line of work to exercise his homicidal tendencies and to work out his own personal vendetta against Daredevil. Bullseye is able to use almost any object as a lethal projectile, be it weapons like shuriken and sai or seemingly harmless objects like playing cards and pencils.

An extraterrestrial android, Brainiac is a principal foe of Superman, and is responsible for shrinking and stealing Kandor, the capital city of Superman’s home planet Krypton. Brainiac has a “12th-level intellect” which gives him incredible calculation abilities, enhanced memory and advanced understanding of mechanical engineering, bio-engineering, physics, and other theoretical and applied sciences, as well as extensive knowledge of various alien technologies.

It’s hard to find someone who hates humanity more than Grodd as he believes the apes are the superior species. Gorilla Grodd is a hyper-intelligent telepathic gorilla with the power to control the minds of others. Grodd can also project telekinetic force beams, telekinetically transmute matter, and transfer his consciousness into other bodies. Black Adam was a corrupted ancient Egyptian predecessor of Captain Marvel, who fought his way to modern times to challenge the hero and his DC Family associates. Black Adam possess all the powers of Captain Marvel, is immortal, he does not need to eat, sleep, or breathe and can survive unaided in space. Though currently reformed, Black Adam was known for his intolerance and hatred towards Captain Marvel.

Stubborn, arrogant, and bent on ruling, general Zod is a militant kryptonian who finds himself on earth with the intention of ruling it. Like Superman, Zod benefits from the effects of the yellow granting him similar powers to Superman’s. However, seeing as zod was a brilliant military tactician trained in the art of war and battle, he tends to have an upper hand on Superman in a direct confrontation.

The adopted brother to Thor, Loki is actually a member of the race of Frost Giants called Jotunheim. In spite of his lack of height (must be one of those recesive genes instances) Loki does posses Asgardian traits such as super strength, stamina, immunity to all known diseases and toxins, as well as some resistance to magic.
Loki is a genuise who posses high level of intellect and sorcery. Sadly, a deep hatred for Thor rules Lokis every thought which often times places earth in harms way.

Thaal Sinestro is the former mentor of Hal Jordan and the arch-nemesis of the entire Green Lantern Corps. Sinestro wields a yellow power ring,  with which he can create yellow energy constructs, fly, create force fields, etc. Unlike the Green Lantern ring, the yellow ring is powered by the emotional energy of fear requiring the wearer to be an expert in inspiring and manipulating fear to use it.

Oroku Saki, better known as The Shredder, is the arch enemy of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and their master Splinter. As the leader of the Foot Clan, he possesses cunning as well as ruthless intelligence, strategic leadership skills, Olympic-athletic skills and is a master of the art of Ninjutsu.
